Coleraine Yacht club has now achieved Champion Club Status from the Royal Yachting Association.  This recognises the value of training as a major way of developing the club.  Young people are our life’s blood.  The champion yachts people of tomorrow.  The club already has two members (Nick Maybin & Ian Slater) in the Ulster youth dinghy squad. We can be rightly proud of them and look forward to others following in their footsteps. We provide practical training in:

There are also shore-based courses in navigation, racing rules, sail trim & first aid. These courses are organised by our training officer, Ivor Paul & club principals Lenny McNeill & Jim Millar and are available to club members and non-members alike.

Learning the Ropes

Experience may be the best teacher, but you need a good grounding in several skills to enjoy your boating, in safety from the start.  The best way to acquire those skills is to undertake some training, apart of which will also give you that all-important experience.  At Coleraine Yacht Club we are currently running powerboat courses within the training programmes developed by the                 Royal Yachting Association.

Level 1.  Introduction to Powerboating.  A basic course of one day’s duration.  It covers launch and recovery, boat preparation and simple boat handling.

Level 2.  National Powerboat Certificate.  The Level 2 powerboat course designed to run over 2 days, covers the Level 1 syllabus in more detail, plus engines and drives, colision regulations, weather forcasts, emergency proceedures, basic chartwork, tides, pilotage and passage planning.
Students are assessed during the course, and have to undertake a practical test consisting of several manoeuvers.  On successful completion they are granted a Level 2 National Powerboat Certificate.

Advanced Powerboat Course.  This intensive 2 day course is aimed at holders of a level 2 National Powerboat Certificate, or drivers who can prove they are competant to Level 2 and have navagational ability at least to Day Skipper level.  It concentrates on the skills required in more testing costal waters, and includes boating at night.  Students can obtain an Advanced Powerboat Certificate on successful completion of the course.

Safety Boat Course. This 2 day course, for holders of a level 2 National Powerboat Certificate, is aimed primarily at drivers of sailing club safety boats and mark-laying craft.
