Over 50 sailors, from various parts of GB and Ireland, congregated on the River Bann on 18th June, for Coleraine Yacht Club’s annual 24 Hour Race.

The endurance event dates back to 1969 and is sailed on the river, in front of the magnificent Causeway Coast & Glens Council buildings, on the outskirts of Coleraine.

After lunch on Saturday, the starting cannon was fired at 2pm, by local dignitary (& sailing legend) Dr Joe Gaston. As competitors jockeyed for position on the river, visitors enjoyed local hospitality overlooking the river, under blue skies and warm sunshine.

Under light Northerly winds, the leader-board remained close as the afternoon progressed, but winds dropped during Saturday evening. As all junior sailors stopped (for their night time break), the air became completely calm.
In accordance with racing rules, sailors had to wait for wind – they could smell food from the BBQ and hear the clubhouse music, but were stranded! Experienced teams ‘parked up’ for a snooze on the river-bank, while others drifted down river and needed a tow from the rescue boats!

By 4am, the wind recovered, this time from the South. By 6am The Misfits’ GP14 held the lead, closely followed by Campbell’s Laser.

To keep energy levels up, everyone had a cooked breakfast and at 8am, junior sailors re-joined the fleet. Everyone enjoyed perfect wind conditions for sailing the challenging tidal currents on the river at Coleraine. Local knowledge did not prevail and the GP14 extended their lead.
